Artist Alley Revamp Project- COMPLETE!!!

A few months ago now, I had the opportunity to be a part of an amazing group of artists that got to create murals all along an alley in Downtown Knoxville- behind Market Square. The project was called the Artist Alley Revamp Project and a dedicated few went out and sectioned off parts of the alley to make plenty of canvas space for those that wanted to participate. And here is the progress of my painting... all done with 3 paint pens and that was it.
The beginning stages... I didn't have a drawing to work off of. Just my imagination.

Many late nights and dark nights were involved. Thank goodness for the lights from the two restaurants that my painting was behind.... others didn't have such a luxury!

Finally come together with patterns and lines.

Here is my final works.... I think I like it!!

If you get the opportunity to run downtown, take a stroll through the alley, there are so many great artists that did amazing murals.

Here is a link if you would like to see us at work and to see the other amazing works of art:

Hot off the Press

Here is a fabulous and amazing article about my jewelry that made it to the UT Press:
Knoxville artist reuses old items for art, jewelry

By: Morgan McConnell • The Daily Beacon

Examples of Sarah Brobst's jewelry.

Knoxville resident Sarah Brobst turns the old into the delightfully new again with her one-of-a-kind salvage jewelry.Brobst, who has been making jewelry since high school, repurposes elements like vintage watches, elaborate brooches and antique knick-knacks in her work. She scours thrift stores, flea markets and eBay in order to select the antique curios that she will transform into quirky and unique creations.

From there, the 31-year-old entrepreneur hits the drawing board and waits for the right inspiration to seize her."I just look at all the pieces that I lay out on my art table and start picking through," she said. "Eventually the puzzle comes together into a beautiful piece."

This can sometimes be a time consuming process."It takes a lot of rearranging and going back to the drawing board because sometimes the ideas don't work," she said.  Brobst then takes her finished hoard of bangles, necklaces, pins, rings and earrings to the Farmers Market held in Market Square every Saturday morning. Her whimsically arranged booth draws a sizable throng of admirers.

"Her work is very unique, it looks sort of up-cycled," said customer Caroline Broady as she fingered a bracelet that may have served as a belt buckle in a previous life. "It's clean, it's wearable and it's interesting."

Her younger brother, Adam Broady, chimes in. "It reminds me of a time when there weren't really big businesses that mass produced stuff," he said. "Things were handcrafted by artisans, one thing at a time, and things were made to last."

Prices run the gamut from $2 up to $500 for the large, intricate brooch bouquets Brobst fashions for brides.

Besides the Farmers Market booth, Brobst supports herself by working full time at Ijams Nature Center, where she co-teaches a class called the "Eco Make and Take Workshop." The class, held the first Sunday of every month and costing participants a reasonable $10, provides students with the opportunity to make their own heirlooms akin to Brobst's wares.

"It's a way to find ways to repurpose, reuse, transform and make new old things that people have laying around the house," Brobst said. "Everyone has that junk drawer or closet filled with old shirts, broken jewelry, worn books and more, and it all just sits there." Brobst helps her students see new potential in old things.

"People can see how their old, crummy stuff can be new and fun again," she said. "Plus there is a huge sense of social fun because everyone can become a teacher and help each other out. There is always food and drinks. Sometimes it's just nice to craft and chat with friends or neighbors."

Brobst, who comes from an artistic background of painting and sculpting, has a few new creative and business ventures lined up in the near future. "I am working on some bigger sculpture pieces out of old clocks and I'm making 'I Spy' table tops out of jewelry and other found objects, so I am working on bigger scale items," she explained. "Plus as far as deals go, I am coming out with frequent buyer cards so that those who buy my things regularly can get free stuff."

The ambitious craftswoman hopes to get to the point one day where she can take her unique merchandise on the road.

"I would love to travel to different shows and festivals, and then do the market as well as sell to shops around the country," she said. "I already have my stuff in six stores locally, one in Asheville, and another in Wisconsin, so I feel like I am well on my way."

In the meantime, Brobst finds fulfillment in the love of her craft and dedication of her fans.

"I just love creating. I have always been the one who loves transforming things," she said. "And I like walking down the street and being able to see one of my pieces on someone and know that I made that and someone else is enjoying it. I couldn't do this without my fans."

Newest Bouquet for a Beautiful Bride!!!

Just finished this amazing bouquet for a lovely bride here in Knoxville. Each piece of jewelry is a memento from members of her family...all together they make a lovely keepsake to be passed down.
Made with all that sparkles, the stem is wrapped in satin and finished in a lace overlay.

The bride (who is keeping the bouquet a secret until the wedding!) picked each memorable piece- some that she remembered from childhood, some that represented hobbies or likes (like her cowboy boot earrings!) and much more.

If you are interested in having a personalized bouquet or floral arrangement for your special day or for your home, contact me at (865) 684-7466 or send me an email at Lilysjb@hotmail.com.

And it begins...

And as today starts the beginning of May, it also begins the season for shows, festivals and markets!!! YEAH!!! To start off this month, Friday May 4th is First Friday in Knoxville and it also kicks off National Bike Month. To honor such a great theme, I have created a line of jewelry made from salvaged bike parts.
Half of all the proceeds will be donated to my dear friend Katie who is going to bike over 500 miles-all the while building houses for the needy along her way. She is just shy of her monetary goal for this trip and I thought these two things go hand in hand.... some come out to Mast and help out a good cause.

Gear from a bike derailer
ALSO---- FARMER'S MARKET on Market Square opens up and I will be there with bells on. Every Saturday from 9am-2pm, come and visit my booth to see new salvage creations- jewelry, terrariums, brooch bouquets and more.

The fun never ends in the crafting world. And if you believe this too be true, come out to Ijams on May 6th for the Eco Make and Take Workshop. This is where you can craft till your little heart is content. Bring something that you deem salvageable and you will get all the help you need to recreate it bigger and better than it was before.... plus there is a plethora of paint, jewelry parts, glues, flowers, scrapbook stuff, and more. Workshop goes from Noon-5pm and the cost is $10
If you have any questions or would like to attend- RSVP to 684-7466.

And your special day could look like this-

VINTAGE CHIC

Quick adds to make your table decor and trinkets unique:

*Add a variety of vintage vases (found at thrift stores) to your tables... you don't even need to put anything in them necessarily- just having the different glass together makes a lovely look.

*Use clip on earrings as place holders

*I planted jade plants and other succulents in funky teacups that I again, found at the thrift store, and placed them at the tables

Old linens, table clothes or even vintage sheets torn into strips for table runners create a fun look for not a lot of money.

Make 2012 your year for Crafting!!!

2012 is cruising along and we have been crafting away the whole time! Thank you all for making the Make and Take workshops a huge success, as well as the salvage jewelry, collage pendants, and painted hubcap classes. I am so impressed with the creativity out there!!!

For those who have never attended one of my classes, it is an artsy mecca of creative madness... to say the least. People of all ages come together to upcycled, repurpose, embellish, transform, and take home treasures that came from old sweaters that were shrunk in the wash, jewelry broken from years ago, old pallets, dingy clay pots, worn pillows, and  more.

Imagine- instead of throwing out that old stuff... transform it!!

Plan to attend the next Make and Take Workshop on March 11th from Noon to 5pm at Ijams Nature Center (2915 Island Home Ave. Knoxville, TN 37912). Cost is $10 a person- part of the proceeds goes back to Ijams as a donation.

Can't make that date?! Why not have a Salvage Party at Home! I bring everything to you, you just invite your friends, your neighbors, or your family for a girls night in or a fun family affair.

This is the year to learn a new skill, a new craft, or new hobby. These classes are your ticket to keeping those resolutions....we have class at least once a month to keep you in the crafting game!

For more information on classes- call Sarah at (865) 684-7466.
